Carolina Raptor Center

By Laurie Bower Epps

My dear friend invited me up to Charlotte for a girls weekend, and I couldn't resist the urge to go. However, I'd made plans with another friend for the weekend, and so I asked if I could bring her along. Since they're both dear friends of mine, they both responded, "Sure!" Undoubtedly, it was the most fun I've had all year. But I didn't forget all of you.... it also seemed to be the perfect opportunity to get in another fashion blog.

While we didn't get to see nearby Latta Plantation, I did get into see the Carolina Raptor Center up the street. From my homeschooling days, I was familiar with the area, and already knew of a few nearby possibilities.

History

When a broad-winged hawk was brought to a local veterinarian in Charlotte, NC back in 1975, it started the Carolina Raptor Center on its most fundamental level. Numerous birds of prey have been rehabilitated by their fine staff of specialists from all over the southeast. Within two years, the first interns arrived, and as a non-profit, they CRC grew by leaps and bounds. By 1981, it was moved to the Latta Plantation site.

The paths are all paved, and it's an easy walk even if you suffer some disabilities. All proceeds go to the rehabilitation of these animals. They did have some acknowledgement to birds of prey in literature which spoke to the nerd in me. Some themes from Guardian of G'hoole and Harry Potter where the mainstay.

Right away, there's a test of your wingspan and that amused Chloe & I. Who knew that I've the wingspan of a golden eagle? I love that flight dream, so I had to check it out.

Chloe's Fashion

Chloe's outfit is from Faded Glory at Walmart. She's grown an inch a month this summer, so keeping up has proven quite difficult. However, the comfort and ease of this active wear has proven perfect for summer.

Visitor Information

There is a slight charge to go into the CRC, but it's about like going to a movie. Well, without the snack bar anyway. The staff is very knowledgeable, and it's really an educational experience. The do have a gift shop that was very tempting. They even had some light snacks, soda, water, and ice cream bars. If I'd been better prepared, many of their items were quite tempting since I collect owls. Maybe next time.

My favorite photo of the day was taken with this raptor statue. After taking many pictures of Chloe and I, we saw the "Do Not Touch" sign, so I don't recommend duplicating it! Live and learn, I suppose.

Isaiah 40:31New King James Version (NKJV)

31 But those who wait on the Lord
Shall renew their strength;
They shall mount up with wings like eagles,
They shall run and not be weary,
They shall walk and not faint.

Artistic Merit

Due to my love of this particular photograph of me, I actually couldn't resist the temptation to play with it. I hope you'll enjoy my feeble attempt. From my heart to yours, I hope you too, soar with eagles.

Until next time,

Stay fashionable and stay blessed,
Laurie
