Back from Vacation

Hi.  I just got back from one of those trips where you spent as much time driving as I spent at my destination.  I thought I'd get a lot more of my summer reading done.  However, with the gusts of wind on the beach in Outer Banks, NC it was quite.... impossible.  I think I only managed to read one chapter the entire time I was gone.

Outer Banks, NC is situated off the northern part of the North Carolina coast.  They are a series of islands connected by roadway.  There is so much to do there.  There are 4 local lighthouses, the original site of Kitty Hawk, tons of wildlife, and lots of water activities.  A highlight for me was seeing the wild mustangs  run through the surf.  It also was the first time we got to connect with my husband's brother's family since their dad died 7 years ago.  I hope I am fortunate enough to get to go there again!

What are you doing this summer?  Join in the conversation!

Summer Reading

After just reading my friend Edie Melson's blog, it made me think about summer reading. Her blog was talking about favorite protagonists. You can catch it at : the WriteConversation.blogspot.com

Summer reading is a pleasure that many of us enjoy. What are you all reading this summer?  Do you like your book selection or not? Weigh in!  Maybe we could start a sort of unofficial book club of sorts.

Currently, I am reading "the Distant Hours" by Kate Morton. It is a bit of a historical fiction thriller if that is at all possible. Morton is writing about a genealogical quest in search of one's past, and it comes complete with a creepy old house, 3 spinster sisters, and the legend of the mud man.  I'll weigh in again once I've finished it!  So far, it has me on the edge of my seat.

Recovering

I am recovering from my surgery still, but I am doing my best to not let it get me down.  My plans for summer are finally taking form.  I am spending all this free time knitting, watching old movies, and reading.  I am starting to cultivate some book ideas.  I think maybe this time will be good for my writing.  It is placing a much needed breath of fresh air into it.  So be prepared for new, and different products out of me.

Also, writing about writing isn't attracting as many readers/followers as I had hoped for.  Would anyone like to read and write about local cultural events?  I was thinking we could start with one day a week.  Please give me some feedback!

End of Semester Woes

As I try to finish up the end of the worst semester of my life, I find that I am incredibly tired.  I don't want to look any longer at books that I wouldn't ordinarily read, or have to stay up till a mandatory 3 AM to finish just one more paper.  I'd like to sleep in and watch old classic movies, and better yet?  Take a trip to the beach, dip my toes in the water after wiggling them around in warm sand.  My kids won't complain in this utopia, and there will be an endless supply of juice boxes for everyone.  Oh yeah.... that would be nice.

Writing Challenges

Have you ever not been able to find a moment to write during a normal hour of the day?  I find this happens to me a lot.  Between being a full-time student and mom, it has it share of challenges.  I find myself writing up papers I've been researching for weeks at 3 AM, only to scramble around in a daze all the following day looking for a place and opportunity to nap!  But the rewards are great.  To create a better life for my children and to have my words have an impact the world would be a marvelous thing indeed.
